ELWOOD HOUSE

ELWOOD, VICTORIA

Alteration and Addition

This renovation to an Edwardian house in Elwood retains the heritage facade and existing front rooms and creates a new living zone at the rear of the house and a first floor level with 2 additional bedrooms, including a substantial master bedroom suite and secluded outdoor deck areas. The design explores the theatrical associations of a sculpted spiral staircase. The staircase becomes the anchoring element of the new plan and informs the lines of the surrounding spaces. A double height void draws light into the existing house and connects the two levels. Metal shingle cladding creates a shimmering pattern of colour across the side elevation of the house, echoing the movement and hues of surrounding street trees.
